Volunteers – Direct Service

  • Women’s Mentor

Offer the women at Hannah Center practical guidance on topics like apartment hunting, job interviews, and household management while providing emotional support. Create a vital bridge between shelter life and independent living by forming meaningful connections with residents preparing for transition. The mentor relationship extends beyond a resident's stay, with check-ins during those critical first months of independence when challenges often arise. Mentors celebrate successes, troubleshoot obstacles, and connect existing and former residents with community resources—ensuring no woman faces her journey alone.

  • Cooking Instructor

Share your culinary skills and nourish our community as a Cooking Instructor Volunteer at Hannah Center. Lead hands-on workshops teaching shelter residents how to prepare affordable, nutritious meals using accessible ingredients. Your guidance will focus on practical skills like grocery shopping on a budget, meal planning, and creating quick weeknight dinners that children enjoy. As you guide women through simple recipes, you'll also weave in lessons about nutrition basics, smart shopping strategies, and kitchen safety—transforming fundamental cooking knowledge into tools for family wellness and financial independence. Through your guidance, residents gain more than cooking techniques; they develop confidence, independence, and the ability to nurture their families through healthy meals long after they leave our shelter.

  • Financial Mentor

Equip women with essential money management skills as a household budgeting mentor at Hannah Center. In this volunteer role, you'll conduct workshops and provide one-on-one guidance to help residents develop practical financial literacy for independent living. Your guidance will cover creating realistic household budgets, prioritizing expenses, building emergency savings, and navigating banking services—all tailored to the specific challenges faced by women rebuilding their lives. The ideal volunteer brings financial knowledge, compassionate communication abilities, and understanding of the economic realities facing our residents. Your expertise helps women bridge the gap between shelter support and sustainable independence, giving them confidence to make sound financial decisions that create lasting stability for themselves and their families.

Lead weekly life skills classes using provided workbooks. Guide discussions on trauma recovery, relationships, and other topics. Create a supportive learning environment for vulnerable women. Maintain confidentiality and trauma-informed approach.
